Hole Description: The Oakmont of Southern Michigan. This U.S. Open style hole is a real test of your golf skills from any tee box. You contend with a fairway that slopes to the left and feeds into a water hazard and rugged hills and heather right that make reaching the green in two a tough proposition if you bail out too far right. Tee Shot Tips: The Aerial view describes it best. It is obvious you do not want to be left off the tee here, but you also need to know that bailing out right is no bargain. While the overall slope of the fairway is to the left, if you go to far right you end up with a lie that is well above your feet and a long approach shot. Your best line is just right of the center of the fairway. Landing Zone Tips: Landing right of center will tend to leave you in the flat spot where you want to be on this hole. So choose a line at the distant cart path right and hope for the best. Approach Shot Tips: Take one more club than you would normally play as you attack this elevated beauty. You can use the 2nd tier as a backstop and bring it back to the lower tier or try to hit the front of the green and feed it into the hole. Know that being short will leave you with a very blind chip shot that requires your best flop style shot to stop it if the pin is up front and a nightmare if the pin is back. The bunker shot in the front of the green is perhaps one of the toughest to get out of on the course. A ball that hits the front of this green will most likely end up half way up the 2nd tier and leave you with six feet of break across the 2nd tier if you are coming back to the middle. A par on this hole is a feather in your cap. Regardless, of your score you will know that you have faced a hole as difficult as any on the US. Open. Putting Tips: This green is moderate to fast. If you are above on the 2nd tier and coming down, you just want to get the ball started and hope it stops. If you are putting across the face of the tier you can expect six feet of break and four to six feet coming back as you simply cannot putt it the perfect speed. You can loop it up the face of the tier about 8 feet above the hole, but you then run the risk of stopping high. Just be glad to two putt this green and move on.
