Hole Description: If ever there was a hole that was worth the price of the round it would be hole six. I say that because it is a feel good kind of hole with a realistic shot at Eagle or Birdie. The hole is both beautiful in its design, and in its shot making appeal. Just about everyone who has played Calderone, has something good to say about hole six. Perhaps it’s a great golf memory that we truly crave as in my case, it was being two feet away from double eagle on this hole that brings a smile. Making the Eagle putt was a bonus, but experiencing how the hole can fight back is also what makes it such a great golf hole. Tee Shot Tips: The tee shot at six is where you bring Eagle into play or fall flat on your face trying. Hit the ball straight and long and you have a chance of getting close in two. Pull it left and a massive fairway bunker will be waiting. The fairway bunker left runs about 75 yards long and captures anything pulled 10 or 20 yards off line left. Miss the tee shot right and you still have a decent shot coming in unless you slice it so far off line you are out of bounds right. The critical factor of where you end up can be the wind on any given day. The tee shot faces the south, as the wind prevails from west to east on most days, that tends to pull the ball toward the trap. But it can also aggravate a slice and push you into the hedge row. So, on most days, your best bet is to keep your tee shot a bit lower on this drive. Dead center of the fairway is what you want on this hole. Landing Zone Tips: Anywhere in the fairway or right is better than being left on this hole. Just know that the left edge of the fairway falls off into the massive bunker and that the rough on the right side of the fairway is pretty fair and you will be fine. Approach Shot Tips: And now for the REST of the STORY, as Paul Harvey would say. If you land on the right side of this massive beauty, you will most likely come to an abrupt stop and will putting over a nasty hog back right that ruins most chances at birdie and brings a three putt in play. Your best putts come from the left side into the center or center cut up to the pin. The green is receptive and will hold. The release is about normal unless you hit the hog right then it stops quick on the side closest to you and kicks long if you are on the back side of it. Putting Tips: Hopefully you are putting from the left side to the center in which case you have a fairly straight putt with moderate to fast speeds. If you are putting from the front to the back from the center, you will be in a slow zone as you are going up a slight grade and the hog right will impact the roll in most cases. If you are putting over the hog, consider it a penalty stroke as you might experience 6 to 10 feet of break from the front right to the left side of the green. The same is true for chips shots that must land on the hog right. You just do not want to be right on this hole if you can stay left of the center that is where the magic happens.
