Hole Description: The Par 4 Fourth hole at Calderone is perhaps the toughest hole you will face all day. It is not unlike some of the great holes Saint Andrews in several ways. First, you have some massive pot hole bunkers off the tee to contend with on the right side of the fairway. Second, the hole is long and hard to reach with your second shot. Third, if you hit the green and leave it short, you could have a 30 yard putt uphill! The Aerial shots and pictures of this green give you the best perspective as to why this hole is a real test of a golfers skills. Tee Shot Tips: If you can keep it in the fairway you are doing well especially on a windy day. So, know going into this shot your round could be riding on this tee shot. Anything right is going to be a nightmare and most likely lead to at least a bogey or worse. So, commit to staying left edge of the fairway. If you can fade it into the fairway about 5 yards right of the left edge you will be in good shape to have a shot coming into a tough long sloped green.
Landing Zone Tips: Flying the bunkers right is possible if you can hit it 300 yards off the tee and it is not a real windy day. However, just over the bunkers the ground is hard and full of contours that make a second shot a real challenge. The fairway is generous on the left side of center and a bit sloped right of center. So if you want the best lie, do everything you can to stay left of center on your tee shot. Approach Shot Tips: Give some real thought to where you can get up and down from when you miss this shot. Trust me, you will miss this shot more than you will hit it flush. This is due to the wind, the length, and the subtle slopes of lie from which you shooting. So, that being said. Your best miss is front center or just left of front center. If the pin is up front. Then the front left edge to center is your best birdie putt. If the pin is back and to the left, aim at the top center. Everything else is a three putt zone on this green or a nightmare chip in the making. This is due to the huge front slope, the huge hog o the top back right, and a bowl like shape contour on the front lower section. Good luck, and know a par here is like a birdie. Putting Tips: Keep your wits about you as you ponder whatever putt you end up on this green. From experience here are few nightmares to consider. If you are on top of the hog and putting towards the cart path, you may be putting 45 feet. The putt however will play like a 3.5 foot putt. You will not believe it as it feels like a 16 foot type of stroke. If you hit it that hard, expect to be off the green and chipping back. If you are low and the pin is high, you will have a putt that is 20 or 30 yards in length and up and over the hog. So, if the pin is middle and you are low, your line will take you off the green right and trickle back to the middle if you get the speed right, which is about like a 130 foot putt kind of feel. Perhaps the devil of all devils is being on the right side and low when the pin is in the front to middle center. Now, you are on the edge of a bowl and can see as much as 15 foot of break around the rim as the ball crosses the giant slope it dives to the left fighting the gravity of the overall slope and the bowl contour. You can easily be 20 feet below the pin for not playing enough break on this putt. So, remember it is just a game and the game in this case is to be low left or top center or perhaps lucky left of top center. Otherwise, the green devils are yours to contend with on this Scottish style green.
