Hole Description:

The par 4 fourteenth hole at Calderone could easily be named Pinehurst Purgatory  for its beauty and its numerous challenges.   It is fair hole that rewards a great tee shot that fades around the bend to the right.   It is a purgatory if you slice it too far and end up in the big fairway bunker that guards the right side of the landing zone or end up in the trees right.

Tee Shot Tips:

This is not all that tough of a shot as long as you can fade the ball.  Simply start the shot off on the left side of the fairway and work the ball in towards the center.  Being long left brings the Heather into play.  Being too far right is the tendency as you strive for perfection and perhaps get a bit greedy and overcook a fade.

Landing Zone Tips:

The landing zone is generous, but it does feed to the right as the pictures indicate.  Just be aware that the reward is close to the edge of the left side of the fairway and you will have a fair shot at the green.

Approach Shot Tips:

From the fairway the green looks tiny and you cannot see the slight down grade in the very front of the green.  The good news is even with the pin up front you can attack the pin.  A well struck shot hits the front three or four feet and bits enough to roll only about 6 feet forward.  The right side of the green has a bowl like contour shape and if the pin is centered or to the right, you have a decent chance of holing out as the contours will feed the ball into the pin.   If the pin is back right you can attack it as you are landing on an upslope.  If the pin is back left your only issue is that there is a hog in the back left section that can make putting difficult.  In which case, you are better off to be just short of the pin or just to the right of it.

Putting Tips:

Most of the puts you will encounter on this green are moderate to slow as the green sits in the shade most of the day so it stays relatively soft in comparison to others on the course.   The back side of this green coming forward can be tricky as your putts are influenced by the hog back left and the down slope.   This putt would definitely be considered fast.   Putting on the right side of the green is no bargain as the contours of the bowl come into play.
