Hole Description:

I would name this hole the Tiger Tamer as I believe even Tiger Woods would have trouble reaching it in two.  If he did reach it, he would be lucky to hold it due to all its complex contours and hog backs.  While the hole appears generous from the tee it tightens the rope the closer you get to the green.  The green is a classic British Open style green as it is massive and easy to hit but difficult to predict where the ball will come to rest.

Tee Shot Tips:

Perhaps the most wide open tee shot on the course, you are free to blast away.  Perhaps the only word of caution would be to make sure you are not in the corn field to the right or driving range left as both are out of bounds.   With that being said, you have almost 200 yards of width to hit.  The bunkers far left off the tee are out of reach for the average golfer unless you are playing the white or gold tees and have a big tail wind behind you.

Landing Zone Tips:

Being just right of center opens up the hole for your 2nd shot.  The rough left is far more difficult than the rough to the right of the fairway.  If you are left of the fairway, you must shoot over the bunkers and somewhat right of the green to return to the fairway.   Going directly over the bunkers is an option, but one that normally leaves you short in the bunker for your 3rd shot or left in a tough downhill section of the course.

Approach Shot Tips:

Welcome to the British Open on this shot.   While you may only have an 8-iron or 9-iron coming in, don’t get too excited yet.  If the pin is up front you simply cannot attack it period.  Doing so will result in the ball running down the front slope towards the back left and a 45 foot putt coming back up hill.  It looks so inviting from the fairway, but when you arrive you will see the taper is downhill from the front of the green towards the back right.   Worse yet, there are two hog backs front left, and right that accelerate a pushed or pulled shot and hurl it to the back of the green.  That being said, If you can be patient, and land the ball a few yards short of this green you can find the front.   If the pin is back left, you can attack it or roll it to the back by hitting the front of the green.   If the pin is middle or back right, aim at the center of the green and short and hope for the best.  You do not want anything to do with the Hog in the back right of this green and you do not want to be right in the bunker or worse right of the bunker as recovery from these zones is perhaps some of the toughest shots in golf.  The reason for this word of advice is you will be chipping to a down slope or landing on a hogs back to try to get close to the pin.

Putting Tips:

This green is fast and full of contours.  Every putt on this green is difficult as you are seemingly always fighting an uphill or downhill bender from all locations.  The exception might be just left of center, or back left.   Be happy with par here even though it is a par five as this green could easily challenge any tour player on this planet.
